What Is A Career Path?

  WHAT IS A CAREER PATH?

A career path is a specific set of jobs which prepare you for upward growth in your industry.it is a long- term plan with specific tasks which will help you to achieve a desirable occupation. One of the best ways to prepare for your dream job is to create and follow a career path.

There are 2 types of career paths.

 Organizational Career Path

A career path you design with your immediate boss is an organizational career path, commonly referred to as a career ladder or a vertical career plan. Climbing the corporate ladder is the objective. While there are many career routes that lead to management positions, there are also many options for those who do not want to work in management. A framework for career paths has already been created by many firms for their personnel.

Here is how the procedure might appear: With your manager, you design your professional path. Together, you will set objectives for your professional lives. These objectives will get you ready for the next stage in your profession, such as:

  • Helping with special projects
  • Taking an online course
  • Earning a certification
  • Mentoring colleagues
  • Shadowing a colleague for a day

To stay on track with your career path,

 * You should review your milestones and goals often.

* Review your career path with your direct manager at least quarterly.

* Work with your manager to schedule times to check your progress together.

 Personal Career Path

A professional path you design for yourself is called a personal career path. It is based on a self-evaluation of your abilities, passions, interests, hobbies, and values. Your career can be built on a personal career path without being bound to a particular company. Make a list of your strengths and then your interests and hobbies if you're ready to start planning your career path. Then list the issues that are most important to you.

Consider the markets that could profit from your abilities. For instance, if you enjoy working with kids, think about a career in education. Look into a career route for pediatric nurses or doctors if you prefer healthcare to teaching. You have total control over how your job develops when you have a personal career path. A more time-consuming but potentially very rewarding professional path is one that is personal. You must exercise initiative to locate tools that support career advancement. Do some research on the topics that will help you get the next job. Even if they are employed by a different company, establish connections with those in your field.(Jefferson, C., 2021)

You can take some personality tests which will help you decide which career suits you best. The following personality tests are widely used.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator:

This survey asks introspective questions to determine your psychological preferences and is a self-reporting inventory. The type indicator system uses this data to enable you to select your personality type from a list of 16 options

On a side note,

Though the Myers-Briggs Indicator Test is used very widely, it measures preferences and not ability. Its popularity is due to the fact that many people are qualified to administer it, it is easy to understand, and there are many supporting books, websites and other sources which are readily available to the general public. (Corie, L., 2012)

  The Keirsey Temperament Sorter:

Similar to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, this self-assessment questionnaire also identifies roles that best fit each temperament type. Instead of emphasizing preferences, the questionnaire concentrates on behaviors and temperaments.

 The Jungian Type Index:

By finding the Jungian cognitive functions or reasons for particular psychological inclinations, the Jung Typology Test is a self-evaluation that can summarize your personality type and suggest jobs for you.

(Herrity. J., 2023)

 (Herman. L., 2020)

Career paths have historically focused on upward mobility within a particular occupation. One of four types of career paths may be used: traditional, network, lateral, and dual

 a. Traditional Career Path—

An employee progresses vertically upward in the organization from one specific job to the next.

 b. Network Career Path—

A method of career pathing that contains both a vertical sequence of jobs and a series of horizontal opportunities.

 c. Lateral Skill Path—

A career path was previously thought of as progressing up the organizational management ladder. The previous two solutions are no longer as readily available as they once were. However, this does not imply that a person must work in the same position for the rest of their life. An individual might frequently make lateral shifts inside the company to find new challenges and get energized.

 d. Dual-Career Path—

A career-path method, that recognizes that technical specialists can and should be allowed to continue to contribute their expertise to a company without having to become managers.

(Jefferson. C., 2021)

Conclusion..

To successfully follow a determine career path, an employee must be willing to learn new skills and adopt to challenges. They must network with their peers and be ready to take a step back or to the side in order to go forward in their chosen career.

  5. The blog emphasizes the importance of adaptability, learning, and networking in a successful career path. It emphasizes the need for proactive learning, resilience in facing challenges, and the ability to network to stay connected to industry trends and collaborate on projects.

As stated by Davis(2017) Career path flexibility allows for strategic moves, while forward-thinking and continuous improvement are crucial for long-term success.
The concept of kaizen, or continuous improvement, is also emphasized. By embodying these principles, individuals can navigate their career paths successfully, despite changes and challenges.

The statement concludes by urging individuals to continue learning and adapting to the ever-changing professional landscape.

    1. Thank you Nalin. As you have pointed out, Kaizen is continuous improvement or change for the better, which is a must for success. Sometimes our dream job means we might have to take a step down the career ladder, but that's fine. Mainly students and mid-career people chose that option. By going down you can always try something new .

  6. Explained well.. Alison(2020) explains that a career path is a series of jobs that help you progress towards your goals and objectives.

Your career path includes the jobs you’ll need to hit your ultimate career goal, but it doesn’t need to follow a straight line. There’s no blueprint or timetable for climbing the career ladder.

Career paths traditionally imply vertical growth or advancement to higher-level positions, but they can also include lateral (sideways) movement within or across industries.

  7. Hi Fawaaz, A career path is a planned journey through various jobs and experiences aimed at progressing in a specific industry. It comes in two types: organizational, which involves advancing within one company by setting goals with your manager, and personal, where you craft your own path based on your skills and interests. Personality tests like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator can help in the process (Betz, N. E., & Hackett, G., 2006). Traditional career paths move upward within a company, network paths involve upward and sideways moves, lateral paths offer sideways changes, and dual paths let technical specialists advance without becoming managers. Success requires adaptability, networking, and continuous learning.
