What Is A Career Path?
WHAT
IS A CAREER PATH?
A
career path is a specific set of jobs which prepare you for upward growth in
your industry.it is a long- term plan with specific tasks which will help you
to achieve a desirable occupation. One of the best ways to prepare for your
dream job is to create and follow a career path.
There are 2 types of career paths.
A career path you design with your immediate boss is an
organizational career path, commonly referred to as a career ladder or a
vertical career plan. Climbing the corporate ladder is the objective. While
there are many career routes that lead to management positions, there are also
many options for those who do not want to work in management. A framework for
career paths has already been created by many firms for their personnel.
- Helping with special projects
- Taking an online course
- Earning a certification
- Mentoring colleagues
- Shadowing a colleague for a day
To
stay on track with your career path,
*
Review your career path with your direct manager at least quarterly.
*
Work with your manager to schedule times to check your progress together.
A professional path you design
for yourself is called a personal career path. It is based on a self-evaluation
of your abilities, passions, interests, hobbies, and values. Your career can be
built on a personal career path without being bound to a particular company.
Make a list of your strengths and then your interests and hobbies if you're
ready to start planning your career path. Then list the issues that are most
important to you.
Consider the markets that could
profit from your abilities. For instance, if you enjoy working with kids, think
about a career in education. Look into a career route for pediatric nurses or
doctors if you prefer healthcare to teaching. You have total control over how
your job develops when you have a personal career path. A more time-consuming
but potentially very rewarding professional path is one that is personal. You
must exercise initiative to locate tools that support career advancement. Do
some research on the topics that will help you get the next job. Even if they
are employed by a different company, establish connections with those in your
field.
You can take some personality tests which will help you decide which career suits you best. The following personality tests are widely used.
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator:
This survey asks introspective
questions to determine your psychological preferences and is a self-reporting
inventory. The type indicator system uses this data to enable you to select
your personality type from a list of 16 options
On a side note,
Though the Myers-Briggs Indicator
Test is used very widely, it measures preferences and not ability. Its popularity is due to the fact
that many people are qualified to administer it, it is easy to understand, and
there are many supporting books, websites and other sources which are readily
available to the general public. (Corie, L., 2012)
By finding the Jungian cognitive
functions or reasons for particular psychological inclinations, the Jung
Typology Test is a self-evaluation that can summarize your personality type and
suggest jobs for you.
(Herrity. J., 2023)
(Herman. L., 2020)
Career paths have historically focused on upward mobility within a particular occupation. One of four types of career paths may be used: traditional, network, lateral, and dual.
An employee progresses vertically upward in the organization from one specific job to the next.
b. Network Career Path—
A method of career pathing that contains both a vertical sequence of jobs and a series of horizontal opportunities.
A career path was previously
thought of as progressing up the organizational management ladder. The previous
two solutions are no longer as readily available as they once were. However,
this does not imply that a person must work in the same position for the rest
of their life. An individual might frequently make lateral shifts inside the
company to find new challenges and get energized.
A career-path method, that recognizes that technical specialists can and should be allowed to continue to contribute their expertise to a company without having to become managers.

ReplyDeleteWhat are the benefits of having a career path?
Hi Deeshan,

The journey of a dream career isn’t a smooth one. You’ll encounter obstacles during the journey, but with a career plan, you can be assured of a smooth passage that’ll land you your dream job and bring you the fulfilment and happiness in your chosen career.
Agreed, According to Turner (2022), successfully following a career path necessitates a willingness to learn new skills, adapt to challenges, network with peers, and potentially take lateral or alternative moves to progress. It's a dynamic journey that requires strategic planning and continuous self-assessment.
ReplyDeleteThanks Divvigga.
DeleteYes ,one has to be willing to face challenges and changes as well if they want to be successful in following a career path.Sometimes the career path is not straightfoward, and there maybe alternate paths that have to be taken. But if you're willing to work hard and keep going you will succeed.
An informative article identifies the key differences between the career path and the personal path. As you stated above, studying a career path holds immense importance as it provides individuals with clarity, direction, and a strategic approach to their professional journey. By understanding the skills, qualifications, and experiences required for their desired roles, individuals can make informed decisions about education, training, and skill development. This knowledge empowers them to set achievable goals, pursue relevant opportunities, and make well-informed career choices. Studying a career path also enables individuals to anticipate industry trends, technological advancements, and changing job market demands, ensuring adaptability and long-term success.
ReplyDeleteThanks Nuwan.Planning a career path saves time and money in the long run. When individuals map out a career path, they know the steps to take, the qualifications and experiences they need to gain in order to achieve their desired career. Whether the career path is organizational or a personal one, each person must be willing to adapt according to situations and also be flexible and openminded to achieve their targets.
DeleteThe blog emphasizes the importance of adaptability, learning, and networking in a successful career path. It emphasizes the need for proactive learning, resilience in facing challenges, and the ability to network to stay connected to industry trends and collaborate on projects.
ReplyDeleteAs stated by Davis(2017) Career path flexibility allows for strategic moves, while forward-thinking and continuous improvement are crucial for long-term success.
The concept of kaizen, or continuous improvement, is also emphasized. By embodying these principles, individuals can navigate their career paths successfully, despite changes and challenges.
The statement concludes by urging individuals to continue learning and adapting to the ever-changing professional landscape.
A good read!!
Thank you Nalin. As you have pointed out, Kaizen is continuous improvement or change for the better, which is a must for success. Sometimes our dream job means we might have to take a step down the career ladder, but that's fine. Mainly students and mid-career people chose that option. By going down you can always try something new .
DeleteExplained well.. Alison(2020) explains that a career path is a series of jobs that help you progress towards your goals and objectives.
ReplyDeleteYour career path includes the jobs you’ll need to hit your ultimate career goal, but it doesn’t need to follow a straight line. There’s no blueprint or timetable for climbing the career ladder.
Career paths traditionally imply vertical growth or advancement to higher-level positions, but they can also include lateral (sideways) movement within or across industries.
Thanks Sachini. In todays fast moving and rapidly changing world, there are many options available, By planning a career path one can assess the skills and experience they have in order to decide what they want to do.There are many industries like Education,Human Resources and Marketing which can be career choices.
DeleteHi Fawaaz, A career path is a planned journey through various jobs and experiences aimed at progressing in a specific industry. It comes in two types: organizational, which involves advancing within one company by setting goals with your manager, and personal, where you craft your own path based on your skills and interests. Personality tests like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator can help in the process (Betz, N. E., & Hackett, G., 2006). Traditional career paths move upward within a company, network paths involve upward and sideways moves, lateral paths offer sideways changes, and dual paths let technical specialists advance without becoming managers. Success requires adaptability, networking, and continuous learning.
ReplyDeleteAgreed,Gayani. As you have mentioned personality tests like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator can help in the process (Betz, N. E., & Hackett, G., 2006) of assessing onesself.Though these are widely used tests, its best to keep an open mind when selecting a career.
DeleteAgreed Fawaaz , a personal career path empowers you to shape your professional journey by designing a bespoke route based on your skills, passions, values, and interests. This flexible path transcends organizations, allowing you to shape your career trajectory according to your aspirations.
ReplyDeleteThanks Nalaka. Yes ,you must do what you are good at and are happy doing.Thats the only way to gain job satisfaction and success in your chosen career path.
DeleteThank you for providing such a comprehensive overview of the two types of career paths, organizational and personal, along with the insightful information about personality tests that can help individuals make informed decisions about their career choices. It's evident that you've done your research and provided valuable guidance for anyone seeking to plan and pursue their dream career.
ReplyDeleteThe way you've outlined the steps for both organizational and personal career paths, along with the emphasis on setting goals, continuous assessment, and proactive networking, reflects a well-rounded understanding of career development. Moreover, your inclusion of the different personality tests, such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, the Keirsey Temperament Sorter, and the Jungian Type Index, shows your commitment to helping readers find paths that align with their unique strengths and preferences.
Overall, your positive and encouraging tone throughout the description of career paths and the personality tests is truly motivating. It's clear that you're dedicated to helping individuals take charge of their career journeys and make informed decisions that lead to personal and professional fulfillment. Keep up the great work!
Thank you,Prasadini. It is always good to have the necessary information when making choices. And when it is a career ,its better to ask from others who are established in the field you are interested in.This way you gain important insights and gain lot of invaluable tips.
DeleteYou're absolutely right about the importance of learning, adaptability, networking, and even making lateral moves for career growth. In your opinion, what do you think are the main benefits of taking a step back or to the side in one's career? How might such experiences contribute to long-term success?
ReplyDeleteThanks Nipuni. As i mentioned in my very first blog, I changed my career by taking a step back and getting out of my comfort zone .One of the reasons was because I wanted to a fulfilling career that would utilize my talents and push me beyond my comfort zone, to do something i would like better. This change has brought me a lot of job satisfaction in meeting challenges and also given me many opportunities to learn new skills.
DeleteAgreed. This article covers the importance of having a career path , types of career path and the personality tests which can be used to choose the suitable career path. Every employee should plan their organizational and personal career path.
ReplyDeleteAccording to Heine (2023) Career pathing can raise your levels of engagement and job happiness by outlining your present professional situation and what you can do to enhance it.
Thanks Prasanna. A career must be one that will give you happiness ,satisfaction and keep up your morale. It is something one will do throughout their lives ,so one must plan a suitable career path which will indicate what skills and talents are necessary to achieve.
