The Difference Between Career Development And Career Growth
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CAREER DEVELOPMENT AND CAREER GROWTH
WHAT IS CAREER DEVELOPMENT?
Career development is an ongoing process that involves self-awareness and improvement. Career development is viewed from two points of view: the employer (the organization) and the employee (the individual).
The purpose of the organization is to maximize the productivity of its people resources to achieve its objectives, and career development supports by assuring the “best match between people and jobs”.
Career development is crucial for employees because it gives them a tool or even a springboard to help them achieve their goals, which could range from getting a raise or receiving incentives and bonuses to having more freedom and satisfaction in their work.
Career growth is simply the process of going up the career
ladder. Whether you want to be a CEO or start a non-profit organization, career
growth is the long-term process of moving towards your ultimate professional
goals. (Team, W., 2023)
•
Becoming promoted to a new position with additional duties, such as moving from
the position of marketing coordinator to marketing manager.
•
Accepting a new position that will allow you to manage other team members and
create a team plan.
•
Making a lateral move inside your organization that enables you to pick up new
knowledge and work on a project you're enthusiastic about.
(Wooll, M., 2022)
Long-term effects of allowing yourself to get too comfortable could include less happiness. It's essential for us to occasionally go beyond our comfort zones as humans. We need to show ourselves that we are considerably more capable than we currently are. Bottom line: Because it may not only help you advance your profession but also make you happier, career growth is crucial.
· As your
career progresses, your pay will eventually rise, assisting you in achieving
greater financial security.
· You can
develop your career to the fullest extent possible. This is due to the fact
that it encourages you to seize fresh possibilities rather than procrastinating
too long in your current position.
· Developing
your career improves every part of your life. You’ll want to improve personally
after you see the results of having a growth mindset at work
Sometimes, the phrases "career growth" and
"career development" are used synonymously.
However, there is a difference between the two.
Although career development is quantifiable, it emphasizes on the quality of
one's work, identifying one's skills, and persistently looking for ways to
improve.
Having a long-term career vision is essential for job
advancement. The other hand

Thank you Nuwan, for your insight. Its a positive sign that employers are supporting their employees in their career growth and development, because ultimately both will benefit from these initiatives.
ReplyDeleteI agree, that emphasized Carrier development and growth is an ongoing process that involves self-awareness and improvement. Career development is viewed from two points of view: the employer (the organization) and the employee (the individual). Career development refers to the process of acquiring skills, knowledge, and experiences that contribute to your overall professional growth. It involves activities and efforts aimed at enhancing your capabilities, both in terms of technical skills and soft skills. Career development is often focused on increasing your competence in your current role and preparing you for future roles within your current career path. Key aspects of career development include Skill Acquisition, Knowledge Enhancement, Networking, Skill Diversification, Mentorship and Coaching, Self-Assessment, and Career Growth.
ReplyDeleteAlso, a literature review by Sislian et al., (2016) mentioned In the modern day, environmental preservation and sustainable development are among our society's biggest issues. The most often acknowledged definition of sustainable development is "to meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the abilities of future generations to meet their needs" (Vilsted, 2004, p. 40). However, there is no single definition that is universally accepted. The triple bottom line, or sustainable development, is the idea that economic, social, and environmental factors should all be taken into account and balanced. The economic benefits that a company receives by operating responsibly are also taken into account in sustainable development, in addition to the financial ones (Elkington, 1994).
Thank you Niru for also highlighting the key aspects of career development like knowledge acquisition, coaching and mentoring.Nowadays there are people known as career coaches who are experts in career planning and offer certified expertise in resume building and motivation to help maximise potential.
DeleteAgreed, Hirschi & Pang (2018) highlight that career development is a continuous and multifaceted process that encompasses self-awareness, skill enhancement, and overall improvement. It is viewed from the perspectives of both the organization and the individual employee. Conlon (2013) states that understanding the nuances between career development and career growth empowers professionals to take charge of their trajectories. Both concepts contribute to a fulfilling and successful journey, with career development fostering continuous improvement and growth paving the way for higher levels of professional achievement.

Certainly! Career development and career growth are two interconnected concepts that play a vital role in one's professional journey, but they focus on slightly different aspects.
ReplyDeleteAs stated by Pastore (2015) Career development refers to the intentional and strategic process of acquiring skills, knowledge, and experiences to enhance your professional capabilities. It involves activities such as training, education, workshops, and mentorship that help you become more proficient in your current role and prepare for future responsibilities. Career development aims to broaden your skill set and make you a more valuable asset to your organization.
On the other hand, career growth encompasses the progression in your career trajectory in terms of job titles, responsibilities, compensation, and influence. It's the advancement from one level to another within an organization or the broader job market. Career growth is often a result of successful career development efforts, as acquiring new skills and experiences can make you a more eligible candidate for promotions or new job opportunities.
In essence, career development focuses on acquiring the tools needed to excel in your current and future roles, while career growth is the outcome of effective development efforts, resulting in upward mobility and increased professional standing. Both are crucial components of a fulfilling and successful career, as they work in tandem to help you achieve your long-term career goals.
Thanks Nalin. Career growth is all about planning and strategy, while development is a transformation process. To achieve development, one has to constantly build on awareness and assessment of ones skills ,strengths and weaknesses to become better and a more confident employee.
DeleteAgreed. You have clearly differentiated between career development and career growth! Career development entails the management of a person’s growth and progress in his or her career. Braer, Flexer, Luft, and Simmons (2008) contend that an individual’s career development is a lifetime process that encompasses the growth and change process of childhood, the formal career education at school, and the maturational processes that continue throughout a person’s working adulthood and into retirement. It is a joint responsibility between the organization and the employee. When the individual employee self-assesses himself and consciously look out for opportunities, constraints, choices, consequences, and programs himself through training and education to equip himself with needed attitudes, skills, and knowledge, that is career planning, Storey (as cited in Hall, 1986). Career management connotes the ongoing process of preparing, implementing, and monitoring career plans undertaken by the individual employee alone or in concert with the organization’s career system, Storey (as cited in Hall, 1986).
ReplyDeleteThanks Tilak. Yes indeed career development is a lifetime process that progresses from employment and eventual retirement. It is always good to keep learning and trying new things as you never know when an opportunity will present itself. Also this way there is less chances of burnout and demotivation.
DeleteAgreed, Career development is the process of improving your skills and knowledge to achieve your professional goals. Career growth is the process of moving towards your ultimate professional goals, which could involve getting promoted, taking on new responsibilities, or starting your own business. (Weng, Q. X., & Hu, B. 2009). Both career development and career growth are important for achieving your professional goals.
ReplyDeleteYes Gayani, career development is the short-term processes done to enhance performance in the current role.career growth is about the long-term vision for the career. Some companies run talent management programmes through the HR department. If you participate in it ,its considered career development. And when that programme helps you earn a promotion later on that would be considered career growth.

Career development refers to the process of enhancing skills, knowledge, and experiences to advance within one's current role or job field. It often involves training, education, and skill-building to excel in existing positions. On the other hand, career growth encompasses the broader progression in an individual's professional journey, including advancements to higher positions, increased responsibilities, and expanded opportunities beyond current roles. While development focuses on skill improvement, growth emphasizes overall career trajectory.
ReplyDeleteNice article and a good read.
Thanks Ralph.
DeleteIt is important to be aware that career development and growth go hand in hand.Without clear goals ,you will not be able to grow, as naturally if you have an ambition and a target you will constantly push yourself to achieve it.Also learning opportunities should be taken, whether in the form of an advanced qualification or a professional accreditation. This collaborative approach empowers employees to explore new roles, acquire new skills, and continuously evolve professionally.
