EMPLOYEE TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
WHAT IS EMPLOYEE
TRAINING?
Companies assist their employees
in acquiring the skills and information necessary to realize their full
potential and perform at their best through continual training and development
programs.
While training and development are two distinct components, both are necessary for workers to reap the greatest benefits. The significance of training and development is rising as well, with AI and other technologies developing at breakneck speed. In just three years, 54% of all employees, according to a prediction by Deloitte, will need to significantly reskill and upskill. HR professionals are already having trouble hiring because of a skills gap.
94% of all employees surveyed for
LinkedIn's Workplace Learning Report stated that they would stay longer with a
business that supported their professional development. In a different survey,
Udemy discovered that for over half of Millennials, learning and growth are the
most significant benefits.
Teaching staff members how to follow a process or finish a particular task is the goal of training. It is typically concentrated on immediate advantages, such as teaching a new employee how to utilize the billing system.
EMPLOYEE DEVELOPMENT is about growth and acquiring skills that will be beneficial in the long run. For e.g. Starting a mentorship for great sales staff
BENEFITS OF EMPLOYEE
TRAINING
*IMPROVED
PERFORAMNCE - Staff become more
confident and knowledgeable about their industry
*HIGHER JOB
SATISFACTION AND MOTIVATION -Continuous training
and development make employees feel more valued and inspires them to give their
best to the company.
*IMPROVED LOYALTY
AND RETENTION -Employees consider
training and development as additional company benefits and stay longer with
companies that give those opportunities.
*MINIMIZE SKILLS GAP - Helps companies bridge any existing or imminent skill gaps,
strengthen weak links and enable internal hiring (this is more cost effective compared
to external hiring).
TYPES OF EMPLOYEE TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
(Team.S.,2023)
Orientation -
The new hires will be welcomed and given an introduction during which they will learn the fundamentals and be ready for their first day of work.
Onboarding -
Is covered in new hire training. The distinction is that during onboarding, a new hire is given a set of ongoing lessons or training sessions to assist in developing the crucial skills they require.
Technical Training -
Is for positions requiring technical expertise, such as programming and data processing.
.
Soft Skills Training -
Soft skills training helps your workers improve personal qualities like communication, leadership, and emotional intelligence. This is more in the field of employee development.
Product and Services Training -
Used to give staff members the knowledge they need about the newest goods, services, or features your business offers so they can give clients the support they need.
Leadership Training -
The most talented workers frequently advance into management roles, and when this occurs, they require training in competencies like decision-making, dispute resolution, and project management.
Safety Training -
Employees in the public sector are frequently obliged to complete occupational health and safety training in order for their employer to maintain compliance with industry standards.
Customer Service Training -
Assists staff in acquiring the necessary abilities and information to make sure they can give your consumers a remarkable experience.
METHODS OF EMPLOYEE TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
Instructor-led Training
Because it enables the instructor
to respond to student inquiries immediately and recommend additional training
resources, instructor-led training can be a very effective strategy for
teaching complicated subjects. Employees can get individualized coaching. In
comparison to online training choices, the main drawback of instructor-led
training is that it can be expensive and time-consuming.
eLearning
It is advantageous since it
enables employees to advance on any device at their own speed. Online films,
quizzes, and gamified elements are all used in eLearning programs to keep
participants interested and increase knowledge retention.
The capacity to train lots of people for not a lot of money is one of the main benefits of online training.
Simulation
Devices for virtual reality and
augmented reality are already commonly accessible. These technologies are being
included by many firms into their staff training programs. A simulation program
is more expensive to create than an eLearning program, but it is more suited
for particular businesses where training is often done one-on-one.
For example, last year, Walmart developed a VR training program to help employees better navigate real-world situations on Black Friday.
Mentoring and Coaching
The key distinction between
mentoring and coaching is that one is carried out with a skilled expert from an
outside enterprise.
Coaching and mentoring are appropriate for fields like sales where employees require continual hands-on training from a qualified expert.
Cross-Training
Employees that have undergone
cross-training can now execute tasks that are not typically part of their job
description. A marketer might cross-train in graphic design, while a cashier
might learn customer service.
Cross-training is advantageous to both the employer and the employee. As the organization develops a more adaptable workforce, the employee gains greater value and is far more likely to advance in her career.
Job rotation and job enlargement and enrichment are two of the most used cross-training strategies
On-the-job
Training
On-the-job training (OJT), as the
name implies, is a training technique that enables employees to pick up new
skills, information, and competences while doing their jobs. An everyday
illustration of OJT is when a software provider trains an HR employee to
utilize a brand-new talent management system.
Lectures
Similar to eLearning, lectures
allow you to train a lot of people for not a lot of money. However, keep in
mind that because it necessitates utter focus for hours, this training technique
can be a little less entertaining than the others on this list.
Group Activities
Workshops, boot camps, and
discussion groups are examples of activities that can promote learning and team
development. They permit one-to-many and many-to-many training, frequently in a
casual setting. Teams that wish to share knowledge and work together to solve
challenges should use this employee training strategy.
Role-playing
While role-playing is quite
similar to group activities, it focuses on adhering to a predetermined scenario
rather than having a free-form debate. Teams that need to foster empathy and
take into account multiple points of view should use this approach.
Case studies
Employees can evaluate and learn
from actual circumstances through case studies. Employees have the option of
reading on their own time or participating in group case studies discussions.

Also women add diversity and add balance to the workplace. They also bring in fresh ideas and different insights.
DeleteGreat article with lots of insights on methods of employee training. As per Divvigaa mentioned according to Ahmed (2023) highlights that training can be expensive and time-consuming, particularly when it involves hiring outside trainers or sending employees to off-site locations. The financial investment required for training programs, along with the time spent away from regular tasks, can strain resources and impact daily operations. Keep up the good work Fawaaz
ReplyDeleteThanks Nalaka. You have rightly pointed out the other aspect of employee training and development. Every type and method of training has its pro and cons, the most common of which are the financial factor and the time sensitivity. The organization should consider its financial options when considering training and methods and choose the most suitable one. Also, where possible in order to reduce time spent away from the workplace, employers can consider eLearning as an alternative, though sometimes in order to gain the long-term benefit you must make sacrifices in the short-term.
DeleteYour comment successfully draws attention to the numerous advantages of staff training and development. Thanks Ilma for your enthusiastic response to my blog. Organizations are able to improve company culture and boost employee morale and innovation through such learning and development programmes. Employees become more confident and competent. This improves teamwork and task management as well.,whilst reducing the need for close supervision.
DeleteYou've provided a clear distinction between mentoring and coaching, highlighting their respective origins within and outside the organization. It's interesting to note your perspective on their suitability for industries like sales, where practical training and guidance are crucial for employee development. This insight underscores the importance of tailored approaches to learning and growth in dynamic fields like sales.
ReplyDeleteThanks Nipuni.Organizations must identify the needs and skills gap of its employees. The organizations that have proper training and development programmes have better employee retention rates, and have better productivity. Overall the organization improves its growth and talent.
DeleteThere are many different methods of employee training and development, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The best method of employee training and development will vary depending on the specific needs of the organization and the employees. It is important to consider the cost, time, and effectiveness of each method when making a decision.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I would like to know what the costs are and time constraints associated with each method of training?
Thanks Niro. You have mentioned the obvious fact that each training method has its pro and cons.Firstly organizations must identify their needs, and see where there is an employee skills gap as well as what are the competencies required. Everything has a cost and time factor. But if in the short-term these training are not done ,then long-term the company will struggle
Delete. So for example, eLearning is a very cost effective method of training. Employees can learn at their own pace and it is easily accessible for anyone. Since virtually everyone has a smartphone it is can be done from anywhere. The main disadvantage is that there is no face to face interaction nd people can get distracted by other apps and internet sites.
Gamification is another style of training. Employees receive instant feedback which keeps them engaged and interested to complete the training. Employees are given badges or rewards as they progress. But this is an expensive method.
The organization has to decide based on its available finances on what can be implemented. However they must realize that if they don't invest on employee training and development they will lose employees and face stagnation within their company. In the long run it is beneficial for the organization and the benefits outweigh the costs.
