Digital Technology To Innovate Career Development

Digital Technology to Innovate Career Development

The implications of digital technologies for career are dependent, in part, on how technologies are believed to interact with society. They may be thought of as tools, as shapers of society, or as social practices. For individuals, digital technologies can be understood through six metaphors: (1) library, (2) media channel, (3) surveillance camera, (4) marketplace, (5) meeting place, and (6) arena. For career development professionals, the choice is using them to provide information, automated interactions, or communication.

Despite the fact that we may not be aware of it, technology has always had an impact on job growth. New avenues for living, learning, and working have been made possible by technological innovation. According to Bain, "all tools, machines, utensils, weapons, instruments, housing, clothing, communicating, and transporting devices, as well as the skills by which we produce and use them" are considered to be part of technology.

(Hooley, T. & Staunton, T. 2020).

Increasing one's digital literacy is not a recent trend. For the purpose of providing career guidance, researchers have repeatedly stressed the need of building competence, confidence, and ability in the use of present and upcoming digital technology.

It's interesting to note that technology has long been used to give career advice when tracing its growth in this area. We have had a system of programs and procedures for a very long period. However, it does bring up certain crucial issues, such as:

* Considering that digital technology has been around for a while, how adept are practitioners at using it in their daily work?

This analyses the role of digital technologies in career development, and argues that they change the context and opportunities for individuals’ careers and career support.(Tristram Hooley and Tom Staunton, 2020)

* What effects might using a variety of ICT apps to provide career assistance have?

By making more information, tools, and resources available for career exploration and planning, it can improve the availability, effectiveness, and efficiency of career advisory services. (International Trends and Innovation In Career Guidance.,2020)

* What do career development professionals need to know and be able to do to help transitions to the workplace, and how is digital technology influencing the workplace?

As workers can use data, analytics, and automation to increase their productivity, creativity, and influence, it is changing the nature and value of employment. (Subramaniam, M., 2021)

(Nicki, M., 21)

Leverage Technologies to Drive Career and Competency Development

The improvement of career and competency development is driven by technology. Learning, career growth, and the development of competencies and skills must all be coordinated. It requires collaboration between management and staff, open communication, learning methodologies, agile goal-setting, and much more.

That in itself is challenging, but when you add a constantly shifting business environment and an over-reliance on in-person, course-based training, learning becomes insufficient to meet business demands.

Employers have a clear mission in a work environment that is more dependent on technology: to engage with employees through your learning technology, connect with them, and create the learning that employees need to thrive.

(Werder, C., 2020)

Enterprise Digital Learning Solutions Take Center Stage

It is obvious that the workforce is immediately impacted by digital disruption, innovation, and transformation. Deskilling is a regrettable byproduct of the digital revolution, but it also offers opportunity. Career growth gives competitive benefits for individuals prepared to adapt, reskill, and retrain. Continuous career advancement is difficult, though. Digital learning solutions have grown in popularity because of this. (Team, W., 2021)

Conclusion:

Career Development Is No Longer an Option

Digital technology is here to stay. It will keep changing and evolving, Those with digital skills will find that they’re in demand. Low skilled workers will be under pressure to keep up with theses changes or fall behind.AI, robotic process automation (RPA), and intelligent automation (IA) will further add to this demand. Organizations can stay ahead of the curve by ensuring that their employees are given continuous upskilling opportunities, and put into place a career development programmes that will in turn enable the organization to stay on top, be competitive and the employees in turn will be relevant and most importantly they will be productive, engaged and happy.

  1. A descriptive article explains the correlation between digital technology and innovative career development. As digital transformation reshapes industries, organisations must align career paths with evolving technological trends. By leveraging digital tools such as online learning platforms, AI-driven skill assessments, and virtual mentorship programmes, organisations can offer employees personalised career development journeys. This integration empowers employees to acquire digital skills, adapt to industry changes, and explore new opportunities in the digital landscape. Moreover, digital technology enables organisations to track individual progress, identify skill gaps, and tailor learning experiences accordingly. This not only enhances employee engagement but also ensures that career paths remain relevant and dynamic in the rapidly changing digital era.

As interactive technology continues to grow in popularity and influence, it is increasingly necessary to align new technologies more closely with career services and associated professional practises. Bimrose et al. (2010)

Besides, it gives the opportunity to connect with the people who inspire us and take tips from them and all of this is achieved by sitting at home and connecting with them through different means saving time and money.

  4. Agreed, Digital technology profoundly influences career development, offering various roles like a library, media channel, and more. It enhances career guidance services, providing information and tools for planning. However, its impact raises questions about practitioners' proficiency. Digital technology transforms work by enabling data and automation. Employers must engage employees through digital learning to meet evolving business needs. Career development is crucial in the digital age, with those possessing digital skills being in high demand, while others face pressure to keep up or fall behind (Arthur, W.B., 2009). Continuous upskilling and career development programs are essential for organizations to stay competitive and maintain productive, engaged, and happy employees.

How do you see the integration of digital technology in career development aligning with the unique cultural and economic factors of Sri Lanka? How might these technological advancements address specific challenges faced by Sri Lankan job seekers and career development professionals?

    1. Thank you Prasadini. You have raised a valid point. In Sri Lanka, except for large multi-national companies and large scale local companies, digitalization is very minimal largely due to the cost factors. However, the shift from traditional methods of operation to digital based operations is currently gaining momentum.
According to a report by McKinsey&Company "In comparison with other Asia Pacific emerging markets, Sri Lanka exhibits strengths in connectivity, digital marketing, investment in digital initiatives, and the ability to move quickly. Yet when compared with China, India, and more developed countries, Sri Lanka is well behind. Its companies lag in appetite for risk, ability to integrate their digital priorities into the overall business strategy, automation of internal and customer-facing processes, and adoption of a collaborative culture between the digital teams and business functions (Alessia De Bustis, Vidhya Ganesan, and Ganaka Herath, 2018)
Though the talent is there, the lack of infrastructure like internet connectivity, electricity and other resources greatly hinders the progress.Government initiatives and international collaboration are two of the most important factors which will help Sri Lankans to overcome these challenges.

  8. Today’s technologies offer a wide array of venues through which career development can be facilitated. Both traditional technologies such as computer-assisted career guidance programs and trendy technologies such as phone apps provide new ways to help with constructing one’s self-knowledge, learning about the world of work, fostering decision making skills, or managing dysfunctional career thinking. Social media has expanded the ways in which people learn about themselves and the world of work by actively connecting individuals with shared interests and passions. Opportunities to learn new skills are a video click away, as are free tests to identify one’s personality and “perfect” career options. While the quantity of online information and resources is overwhelming, often the quality of these resources is questionable. When individuals are relying on these sources to inform and ultimately make career/life decisions, career practitioners have an ethical and moral obligation to help them evaluate the robustness of these instruments and information sources.
